Sheep Farming For Beginners

A lot of folks never dream of raising sheep as pets, they only think of rearing sheep as a form of milk and meat production. But if you are one of those people who wish to manage sheep as a pet then you are at the right place because this article will provide you with guidelines on how to be a happy sheep owner.

When speaking about good natured animals there is absolutely no other livestock like sheep. They are liked by the elderly and children. They can be entertaining to manage and can teach the young ones how to be responsible.

Below are some tips in how to keep this livestock:

- The first thing to note when starting out to keep sheep is your funds. You must invest a great deal of money in buying fencing, building a sheep house, vaccinating your lamb and feeding your sheep.

- You need to have enough land for your sheep to graze on. The land must also be enough to house all of your sheep. If you depend on pasture then having some large land is a must, but if you don't have large land you may feed your sheep hay or any other feeds that is ideal for sheep.

- Choosing what type of breed you want to manage is your following step. Nigerian Dwarf or Pygmy sheep are recommended as domestic pets but any other breed can do as long as you look after them.

- You should be sure to get more than one lamb because sheep are sociable animals and like living with other sheep. Your lamb can be mixed (males and females), but if you don't want your sheep to breed you may get your male ones neutered.

- Your sheep must be kept safe. You can do this by building a sheep house and fencing it as well. Fencing will keep out unwanted predators such as dogs and foxes that can harm your sheep.

- Make sure your sheep are feed as well. Lambs like eating grass, weeds and clover. You should also bring an animal medical practitioner every once in a while to evaluate your lambs and make sure they may be getting the right amount of nutrients.

Becoming a happy sheep owner requires you to care for your sheep. Give them well built shelter, supply them with food and water on daily basis.
